Lost or Stolen TIE

Pickpockets on the train? Got drunk at a night club? Forgot it on a trip?

Whatever the reason may be, you have lost your TIE. If it wasn’t stolen and simply lost someplace safe (say, in your apartment), give yourself a few days to scour around and look for it. After that though, it’s time to get started on the process of getting a new one.

Step 1: Report the theft or loss of your TIE to the police. You can go to the nearest police station or whichever one is most convenient for you. They will provide you with a certificate which you will later on use to apply for a duplicate. Reporting the theft or loss is also important because they will be able to cancel your card.

Step 2: Request a duplicate at the Extranjeria. First, you will need to get an appointment. This will be done at the exact same place where you originally applied for your TIE.

I’m sure you remember this appointment when first getting your TIE. Well, it’s basically the same process for getting a duplicate.

For your appointment, you will need the same documents you brought to your initial TIE appointment as well as the aforementioned certificate from the police. If you need a refresher on which documents that would be, see the following guide:

Your First Tie

There is one key difference, however. In the EX-17 form in section 4, you will mark Duplicado por Robo, Extravio, Destruccion o Inutilizacion.

Section 4:

This time you will mark the Duplicado option.

Step 3: Wait for the new card to be processed and pick it up around 40 days later. It should be exactly the same as you initial TIE process, but next time be more careful!
